British Waterways - Squandering Our Inheritance?

Background Pocketing the Project Funding BW - Consultation or Con Two-faced on Water Transport Contact Us
The purpose of this website is to show that British Waterways increasingly takes the ‘needs of the waterways’ to mean the ‘needs of BW itself’.

Click on BW - Pocketing the Project Funding? to see how the organisation will go to any lengths to improve their bottom line.

Contrary to their public statements,
BW - Consultation or Con? shows how little regard BW have for the views of the waterway community in their so-called regeneration schemes.

Finally, in the face of global warming and the imperative to reduce road traffic and carbon emissions, BW - Two-faced on Transport? highlights BW’s hypocrisy on freight transport.

BW Action Forum encourages British Waterways to:

1

Get back to developing and maintaining our waterways for navigation, particularly for freight traffic where this is a viable alternative to road transport.
2 Give greater priority to the
views of waterways users
and the waterside community.
3 Make the charges for use of
the waterway environment more equitable, for example by charging local councils for the free use their citizens get from the waterways amenity.
4

Remove the potential of a conflict
of interest where British Waterways personnel can receive a financial return from directorships of companies bidding for development projects.

5 Plan development projects better to increase BW’s income and reduce reliance on DEFRA, but without compromising our waterway
environment or its use.
British Waterways will count its cash and go on to wipe out another boatyard somewhere else
British Waterways is a typically flawed public agency that often tries to emulate commercial competence but falls far short of its own ambitions
